Over the course of a lifetime we change and so do our homes. Our homes reflect our lifestyles. There are times when we have active lifestyles and times when we slow down. “Universal Design” is a concept that has been promoted to make homes more livable for a lifetime of use.

Universal Design features are subtle and stylish. You would never know that a house is purposely designed for use by anyone, at any age and with any ability. Many of these features add both function and value to a home. We are seeing a growing trend in the home building and remodeling industry where Universal Design principles and products are being used more frequently in project planning.

Project Spotlight: Contemporary Universal Bath

Watching how her husband, who had been wheel-chair bound, consistently have difficulty using their master bathroom left this homeowner thinking about her own future needs. Instead of continuing to deal with the space as it was, she made the choice to upgrade it to fit her style, and to work for her long-term needs. The result is a spectacularly crisp and modern universally-designed bathroom. This bath is a NARI Local Contractor of the Year 2015 Winner in the Universal Design Category.

Project Spotlight: Japanese-Inspired Contemporary Bathroom

This Project Spotlight master bathroom had the advantage of size, but excelled at little else. The original space felt dark, dreary and dated. The shower was difficult to keep clean, and the whole space needed an injection of style and function. The solution came in seeing the space transformed into a contemporary bathroom inspired by the fusion of modern and traditional Japanese design.
