10 Design Ideas for Any Room in Your Home

Posted by Neal's Design Remodel on Tue, Jan 25, 2022

There are many ways to add interesting details and character to your home, from adding unique fixtures and lights to the colors you select for the walls. As you think through the possibilities for your remodel, it helps to know that there are many ways you can add your own flair or customizations to all areas of your home, and you don't have to stick with just the regualar basics. Here are 10 ideas to get you started for ways to enhance the design of any space in your home.

1. Artisan or Handmade Tile

There are a variety of options when it comes to artist- or individually-made tile. Whether you'd like something modern and quirky or historically-inspired, handmade tiles come with a lot of inherent interest and variation. Artisan tiles could be selected for a wide range of projects including kitchen backsplashes, bathroom walls, or fireplace surrounds.

2. Exposed Beams

Your home may or may not have aesthetically pleasing wooden beams already, but whether they're already there for support or added just for looks, an exposed beam in the ceiling of your space will be an eye-catching accent and works for a variety of traditional or transitional styles, especially for rustic or natural touch.

3. Back-Painted Glass Accents

Newly trending this year, back-painting is the process of adding opaque or semi-opaque color to the backside of a clear glass panel. Use it as the glass insert in cabinetry to add more color or create depth in your space without showing off your cupboard interiors.

4. Modern Wallpaper

Though wallpaper isn't everyone's taste, and it always seems to come and go through trends, wallpaper can often extend or enhance the design of a space and tie other elements together. Modern wallpapers with trendy and thoughtful designs are available in new formats for every style preference.

5. Leather Tile

Leather is one of those materials that can be equally classic and refined as it is bold and edgy. It also makes for a tile backsplash with a unique and statement-making texture. Go into this one understanding the maintenance needs, but if you're looking for an unexpected detail, consider leather tiles.

6. Wood Hood Accent

Let's say you like the looks of a simple and minimal range hood, but it's just a bit too plain. A wood panel accent might be the solution. This design idea adds natural elegance in a minimalist format that doesn't force a design direction or call too much attention to itself.

7. Barn Doors

Barn doors can be as rustic or modern as you can envision. The track mechanism is the distinguishing feature of this door option, and it's a great choice if a swinging door isn't right for your space. Go with a wood panel if you'd like something farmhouse-inspired, or pick a steel and frosted glass door for something more industrial and modern.

8. Reclaimed Wood

The recycling movement from the past few decades has given rise to new ideas when it comes to wood elements in your home. Wood salvaged from old buildings (or even from your own during demolition) can be cleaned up and repurposed in other ways, including unique wall treatments, flooring, or one-of-a-kind fireplace mantles.

9. Custom Railings

We may be inclined to think that all railings are the same, but give a look to what's out there and you'll find that you don't have to settle for something standard or typical. In recent years, we've installed a variety of railings for stairs and upper floors, in both intricate, traditional, and sleek, modern styles.

10. Wainscoting

They say that everything old becomes new again. Wainscoting is a wall treatment that includes paneling and a rail that partially covers the lower portion of a wall, typically at or above chair height. Used for centuries, wainscoting can have a simple or complex look, so it can be tailored to virtually any style space. It's also a great way to tame a bold paint color and add character to a dull wall.
